“The Way of the Master” is a well-designed, highly developed website promoting an effective approach to personal evangelism.
Conceptually, it is built on the fact that most people, though not willing to call themselves “perfect,” neither see themselves as being particularly bad sinners. You often hear, “Well, I haven’t killed anyone.”
The first step in “The Way of the Master” is to get someone to acknowledge that they are in fact quite sinful by having them compare themselves to the standards set forth in the ten commandments. If someone is willing to discuss the matter at all, then this is very effective in getting someone past what is the often the most difficult hurdle: to recognize that they are lost sinners in the first place.
One caution in using this approach is to be careful to make sure that one does not inadvertantly convey the idea that someone can somehow keep the ten commandments and thereby be saved. Also, from a theological point-of-view, we are not only sinners because of what we do, but are sinners because of who we are. In other words, we sin because we are sinners, rather than simply being sinners because we sin.
Also, evangelism is never a matter of simply using “the right method” to produce results. No one comes to Christ unless the Father draws him. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. And no matter what approach is used, the essential truths of the gospel must be presented.
